How It Works: Laser Hair Removal

How It Works: Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal is one of the most popular procedures I perform at Refresh Wellness. Because it’s also a cosmetic treatment on which I’m asked a lot of questions, I wanted to dedicate this blog to the ins-and-outs of laser hair removal. I’ll just start by saying that I love this procedure and have treated myself. Now, onto your questions!

How do you remove the hair?
The hair is removed using the newest laser technology. I use an Alma Soprano laser that slides over the skin with the help of a warm gel. No more zapping or painful laser hair removal! The Alma Soprano gently heats the melanin pigment in the hair follicle so that it shuts down growth in about 10 days. Unlike older lasers where hair had to be grown above the skin for treatment and only worked on light skin tones, the Alma Soprano works when you’re clean shaven and on all skin types.

So the hair is gone in 10 days. Is that it?
No, it takes approximately six sessions that are six weeks apart. This allows the laser to destroy the hair follicle in all three growing hair cycles twice.

Does it hurt?
It doesn't hurt. Really. The older lasers as described above, used to zap and be painful. This laser is warm and slightly prickly on darkest, thickest hair, but is known as the "Pain-Free Hair Removal System" for a reason. The new technology is more specific to melanin pigment and requires less heat and burning to be effective.

Will the hair come back?
The hair that has been eliminated will not come back. However, new hair can grow in those areas over long periods of time as the body will naturally try to produce new hair. If new hair does grow, it’s generally very sparse. Hormone changes, such as pregnancy and menopause, can also trigger new hair growth. Therefore, we offer hair removal packages at Refresh Wellness. Not only do you get six sessions, but we give you two touchup sessions in the first year and two touchups a year for five years COMPLIMENTARY!

Does hair color or thickness affect the results?
Dark hair on light skin works the best. However, the Alma Soprano Laser works on any skin type. Best results are always achieved when skin is at its lightest. That said, self-tanner does not affect the results.

Does it work for both men and women?
It can be used for men and women and any body part can be treated.

How long does the hair have to be for proper removal?
The hair does not need to be long at all. With the older lasers, the hair had to be grown above the skin surface. However, with this new technology, it works best if you’re clean-shaven. No more embarrassing hair growing the week before your laser appointment.

How long does a procedure take?
The procedure varies in length depending on the area. In general, it takes about 10 minutes for the underarms, 15-20 minutes for lower legs, and 5-10 minutes for the face.

Does it irritate skin like waxing or shaving?

It does not irritate the skin like waxing or shaving. In fact, we use laser hair removal to eliminate razor bumps for good! When the hair stops growing, the bumps disappear.  You won’t even notice redness after a treatment. No burns either!
