Dermal Fillers: What Are They, and Which Is Right for You?

Our facial tissues thin out as we age, resulting in a loss of volume, which can cause hollow cheeks and fine lines around our nose and mouth. Dermal fillers are a great way to replace that lost volume and restore a more youthful, radiant appearance. But not all dermal fillers are the same, so it’s important to understand how each one works to decide which injectable is right for you.

Belotero

Belotero is a very thin hyaluronic acid dermal filler designed to improve fine lines in delicate areas, like under the eyes. Many fillers leave a blue tint in this area, but Belotero has a low enough viscosity that it does not show through the skin. It’s also frequently used to enhance the size and shape of lips. The filler is injected near the top of the skin to fill in tissue around and below fine lines, with results that can last up to six months.

Juvederm

Juvederm is a great solution for filling in deep creases and fine lines, especially in areas between the eyes and from the nasal crease to the mouth. It helps with fine smoker lines, defines cheeks, and lifts the skin. Juvederm also adds a soft, natural fullness to lips. Many patients opt for Juvederm because of its thicker consistency that makes it ideal for restoring volume and the ability to stimulate collagen production as a hyaluronic acid filler. Results can last up to one year.

Vollure

Vollure is an injectable hyaluronic gel for moderate to severe lines from the nose to mouth or lips for a subtle softer feel compared to Juvederm. Results can last for up to 18 months.

Volbella

Volbella is a natural-looking injectable designed to enhance lips and improve smaller wrinkles and fine lines around the mouth specifically. With some similar properties to Juvederm and the other hyaluronic acid fillers, it keeps skin and lips plump and hydrated with added volume of lip enhancement. Volbella delivers results that last nine to 12 months.

Voluma

Voluma is also a hyaluronic acid filler and collagen stimulator used to correct and lift sagging skin. While no filler is a total miracle cure for skin laxity, Voluma does enhance volume and add definition to sunken cheeks. It adds firmness to soft jawlines, chin and jowel improvement and nasal bridge correction, while delivering a smooth, natural-looking fullness that can last up to two years.

Radiesse

Radiesse is another filler composed of calcium hydroxyapatite suspended in a gel matrix. Its known for its ability to restore volume to the face similarly to Voluma. It has the ability to add lift and definition to the cheeks, chin, and the area between the nose and mouth. In addition to offering some wrinkle reduction, new studies show that Radiesse also stimulates collagen similarly to other hyaluronic acid fillers for a more youthful appearance, with results lasting up to a year.

Versa

Versa is a newer filler to the market. Like Juvederm and Vollure, it is used for moderate to severe lines and lip enhancement but with less swelling post procedure than the other fillers. It is composed of hyaluronic acid but is smoother in consistency due to its spherical particles and is thus more consistent in volume. Versa is a versatile filler, hence its name, and lasts up to a year as well.

Of course, filler results can be enhanced with laser skin resurfacing such as Fraxel Restore Dual or with laser skin tightening, micro-needling, peels, or with Aqua Gold detox and skin tightening procedure.
